Changing a Flat Tire Safely

Step 1: Find a Safe Spot

Pull over to a flat, solid surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights. Never change a tire on a hill or soft ground.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools

You'll need: jack, lug wrench, spare tire, and your owner's manual.

Step 3: Loosen the Lug Nuts

Before jacking up the car, loosen the lug nuts about half a turn. They're tight — use your body weight.

Step 4: Jack Up the Car

Place the jack under the reinforced jacking point (check your manual). Raise the car until the tire is about 2 inches off the ground.

Step 5: Remove and Replace

Remove the lug nuts, pull off the flat tire, and mount the spare. Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 6: Lower and Tighten

Lower the car partway, then fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower completely.

• Spare tires are temporary — don't exceed 50 mph.
• Get the flat repaired or replaced within 50-70 miles.
