How to Clear a Clogged Shower Drain with a "Zip-It" Tool

Slow-draining showers are usually caused by an accumulation of hair and soap scum caught just beneath the drain cover. Chemical drain cleaners can damage your pipes over time, but a plastic drain snake (commonly called a "Zip-It") is an inexpensive, chemical-free tool that physically removes clogs in minutes. Here is how to use it safely and effectively.

What You’ll Need:

• Plastic drain cleaning tool (Zip-It)
• Rubber or disposable gloves
• Flathead screwdriver (optional, depending on drain type)
• Trash bag or plastic grocery bag
• Paper towels or old rags

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prep the Area and Protect Yourself
   Put on your rubber gloves to protect your hands from bacteria and grime. Place a trash bag right next to the drain so you have a quick, mess-free place to dispose of the debris.

2. Remove or Adjust the Drain Cover
   Check your shower drain. If it has a removable strainer or a screw-in plate, unscrew or lift it out. If your drain has a fixed grate with narrow slots, simply check to ensure the thin plastic tool can fit directly through the openings.

3. Insert the Tool
   Hold the ring/handle of the Zip-It tool and slowly push the pointed end down into the drain opening. Keep feeding it straight down until you meet resistance or until almost the entire length of the tool is in the pipe.

4. Snag the Clog
   Gently twist or wiggle the tool slightly from side to side. The barbed edges lining the sides of the tool are designed to catch and latch onto hair and tangled debris.

5. Extract the Debris
   Slowly and firmly pull the tool straight up and out of the drain. Do not yank it quickly, as this can splash dirty water or cause the debris to slide off the barbs.

6. Clear the Tool
   Over your trash bag, use a paper towel to strip the trapped hair and sludge off the barbs. If the clog is severe, repeat Steps 3 through 5 until the tool comes back out clean.

7. Flush with Hot Water
   Turn your shower faucet to the hottest setting and let the water run full-blast for 1–2 minutes. This flushes away any loosened residue and verifies that the drain is flowing freely.

8. Clean Up and Reassemble
   Wipe down the shower floor and drain area with a paper towel. Reinstall the drain cover or screw the grate back into place. Rinse off your plastic snake with warm water if you plan to reuse it, or dispose of it in the trash.
