How to Roll a Cigarette with a Cigarette Roller

Rolling your own cigarettes can be more cost-effective and allows you to customize your tobacco blend. Using a manual rolling machine (or "roller") is the best way for a beginner to achieve a tight, uniform, and professional-looking cigarette every time.

1. Prepare Your Materials Gather your loose tobacco, a pack of rolling papers, cigarette filters (optional), and your rolling machine. Place the roller on a flat surface or hold it firmly between your palms.

2. Fill the Trough Slide the rollers open (usually by lifting or shifting the movable pin). Evenly distribute a pinch of tobacco into the space between the rollers. If you are using a filter, place it at one end of the trough before adding the tobacco. Do not overpack, as this will make the cigarette difficult to smoke.

3. Close and Shape the Tobacco Snap the rollers back together. Hold the machine with both hands and use your thumbs to rotate the front roller downward (toward you) while your index fingers rotate the back roller upward. Do this for 2–3 full rotations to compress the tobacco into a neat cylinder.

4. Insert the Rolling Paper Take a single rolling paper and hold it with the adhesive (gummed) strip at the top, facing toward you. Insert the bottom, non-adhesive edge of the paper into the slit between the closed rollers.

5. Feed the Paper into the Roller Slowly rotate the front roller downward with your thumbs. The machine will pull the paper in. Continue rolling until only the top gummed strip is visible sticking out of the machine.

6. Moisten the Adhesive Lightly lick the gummed strip along its entire length. You only need a small amount of moisture to make it tacky; avoid soaking the paper, as it may tear.

7. Seal the Cigarette Rotate the rollers downward one or two more times to pull the moistened adhesive into the machine and seal it against the rest of the paper.

8. Remove and Inspect Pop the rollers open or slide the top bar back to reveal your finished cigarette. Gently tap the end against a hard surface to pack the tobacco down, and it is ready to use.
