Standing in ankle-deep water during your morning shower is frustrating, but you don't need expensive chemicals or a pricey plumber to fix it. Most shower clogs are caused by a buildup of hair and soap scum caught just beneath the drain cover.

Here is a quick, beginner-friendly method to clear the blockage and get your shower draining like new in just a few minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Remove the Drain Cover
   Depending on your shower type, the drain cover will either lift off easily or require a screwdriver. If it is held in place by screws, remove them and set them safely aside (away from the open drain) so they don’t fall in.

2. Extract the Main Hair Clog
   Insert a plastic drain-cleaning snake (often called a "drain zip tool") or a straightened wire coat hanger with a small hook bent into the tip into the drain. Twist it gently to grab the hair, then slowly pull it straight up. Discard the debris immediately into a trash bag.

3. Wipe Down the Drain Opening
   Put on rubber gloves and use a paper towel or an old rag to wipe away any thick grease, hair, and soap scum clinging to the interior rim of the pipe and the underside of the drain cover.

4. Add Baking Soda and Vinegar
   Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda directly down the drain opening, followed immediately by 1 cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz vigorously; this natural chemical reaction breaks down remaining soap scum, mineral deposits, and biofilm clinging to the pipe walls.

5. Let It Work
   Allow the fizzing mixture to sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes to dissolve residual buildup and neutralize odors.

6. Flush with Hot Water
   Boil a kettle of water (or run the shower at its hottest setting) and pour it directly down the drain. The sudden rush of hot water will flush away the loosened grime and residue.

7. Test and Reinstall the Cover
   Turn the shower on at full blast to ensure the water swirls down freely without backing up. Once confirmed, replace the drain cover and secure the screws if necessary.
